Mini implants are a predictable, minimally invasive procedure to solve many dental problems. They have been FDA approved and the placement procedure is much less invasive than traditional implants. The most common use of these innovative devices is to help retain loose lower dentures. Most patients do well with upper dentures since the shape of the upper jaw allows for a "suction seal" that helps hold in the plate. Lower dentures can not achieve this suction due to the shape of the jaw. Mini implants allow the lower denture to snap into place allowing for a more secure, comfortable bite. Traditional implants have been used for this purpose as well ,but they are much more expensive and there is usually a waiting period of up to six months before they can be used. Mini Implants can be used immediately after placement and be fit to an existing denture. In a two hour procedure the patient goes home with the denture and mini implants ready to use. There is no cutting of the gum or sutures, only a local anesthetic is needed, and post operative discomfort is minimal. This approach fits perfectly into the minimally invasive philosophy of modern dentistry. Placing four mini implants can also cost less than half the price for two standard implants, the traditional approach to loose lower dentures.
